Building your first Bug Out Bag can seem like a large task. A bugout, BOB, or 72 hour kit should consist of a few basic item. #1 Water. Remember in most cases each person will need 1 liter per day minimum, so be sure you have the ability to purify drinking water. #2 Food. Three days food can include freeze dried packets used by backpackers and hikers, power bars, etc, I like freeze dried food because it is very light weight and tastes good. #3 Clothing. be sure to include a pair of sturdy boots or shoes, a pair of cargo pants, wool socks, a waterproof jacket and hat, warm gloves, and a nice thick wool sweater. I also like to carry an extra bandanna made of cotton. #4 Shelter. If you are going to survive three days outside you are going to need shelter. I recommend a small lightweight tent or at least a 6×10 waterproof tarp. A good bedroll is important. I would recommend a sleeping bag in cold winter climates or a good heavy army style wool blanket. #5. First aid kit. I recommend building your own first aid kits. Checkout USNERDOC on youtube. He sells excellent kits and offers excellent instructions that will heldp you build your own. #6 Basic Gear. Basic gear includes a high quality LED flashlight with extra lithium batteries. I would look at lights made by Fenix, 4Sevens, Streamlight, or Surefire. A bare minimum of 3 ways to make a fire and several types of tinder. A sturdy fixed blade knife is a must as well as a folding saw. Be sure to have a way to cook your food. I small backpacker style pot for cooking. #7 Weapons. The fact of the matter is you might be dealing with a WROL / SHTF situation, or close to it, and people are likely to do crazy things. Being prepared to defend yourself is part of the survivalist mindset. I would recommend a Glock 19 with two extra magazines. Outside of guns your survival knife could be used as weapon if you had to. Also something as simple as a big walking stick or club can be a strong deterrent for bad guys. It’s all about giving yourself options.
The current wildland fires and mandatory evacuation notices my neighbors have been receiving have bought my 72 hour survival BOB bag to mind. I am of the opinion that those of us who are heads of our households have a duty to get our family’s bug out bags put together and ready for action. The gear I have selected for my BOB bag may or may not apply to your circumstances. This video is simply a place to start. My hope is that upon watching this video you will be inspired to do what need to be done and get your family prepared for economic collapse or natural disaster. A bugout bag should hold a few essentials, survival gear, communication equipment, food, first aid supplies, flashlight with spare batteries, water, a complete change of synthetic clothing that will dry quickly if gotten wet, firearms with extra ammunition and spare magazine, A nice warm wool blanket, a way to filter water, etc. For me the aluminum framed Alice pack is a great way to store you gear.
